Upcoming shortage of Reandron

Reandron NewsPlease see below a letter from Bayer about the upcoming short term interruption to supply of Reandron. This information has been presented with the intention of reducing the distress of both patients and prescribers triggered by the shortage in late 2018. My contacts in Bayer have been very supportive and keen to provide as much clarity as possible about the duration of this supply shortage.
It is easy to swap Reandron over to testosterone gel or cream – Testogel or Androforte 5%. There are no issues with shortage of these products. They are also available on ‘authority’ prescription if issued by a sexual health physician, urologist or endocrinologist. GPs are encouraged to liaise with specialists to clarify doses or issue bridging prescriptions.
Testosterone implants can also be ordered from a compounding pharmacy, such as Green’s Dispensary in St Peters in Adelaide. The cost varies with the dose required:
  • $90 for 50mg
  • $93 for 100mg
  • $110 for 200mg
I will keep you posted regarding new developments.

To: Medical Professionals,

Subject: REANDRON® 1000 testosterone undecanoate 1000 mg/4 mL injection vial

Bayer Australia Limited (Bayer) would like to advise you of an upcoming temporary out of stock (OOS) for REANDRON 1000 (testosterone undecanoate) injection vials (AUST R 213942) in Australia due to a global supply shortage of this product. The expected OOS is anticipated to occur approximately from March 2019 and to last for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Bayer is working with the manufacturer to expedite re-supply and expects to be back in stock of REANDRON 1000 shortly.

There are currently a range of testosterone replacement therapies registered on the ARTG and available in different dosage forms for your patients including gels and creams. Implants may also be available from compounding pharmacies.

Given REANDRON 1000 is a long acting depot injection, it is recommended to measure and monitor the patient’s testosterone serum levels prior to the alternative treatment option to ensure that the desired concentrations are maintained. Please find a link to the Reandron Production Information below for your reference:

We will continue to monitor the stock situation and will provide further updates to you.

Should you have any specific patient management queries during the temporary out of stock, please contact your nearest Sexual Health Physician (SHP) or Endocrinologist for further information.

Alternatively, if you have any enquiries in relation to Reandron or regarding the temporary out of stock, please contact Bayer’s Medical Information Team during business hours on Bayer’s free call number 1800 008 757. Alternatively you can email your enquiry to Bayer at medinfo.anz@bayer.com.
